What type of bedding is the best for a 5 year old horse (no foal by side)?

  • Depends on the environment and your budget. I prefer bedding pellets because-
    dust free
    less waste
    very easy to clean stall
    saves time
    manure haulers will accept them mixed in the manure

    Shavings (pine, peanut, etc)
    Nice look
    Longer clean time
    cheaper

    Avoid straw, it provides some warm but no drainage. It very quickly smells, however it is cheap.

    Pellets- $8 a bag (about)
    Shavings- $4-7
    Straw $4-6


  • a low dust bedding is better if the stable has no opening other than the main door

    but shavings,rice holes are great beacuse u can shift thru it to get to the poo and not waste as much bedding and wont cost u much

    with straw u have to replace it everyday and shavings and rice holes u can simpley clean it each day then put a whole heap in once a week =]
