Removing Cat Urine from Carpet Steps

When your cat has urinated on your carpet, you must act quickly before the stain and odor become permanent. The tips below will give you the best possible chance of removing cat urine from carpet.

You must first soak up as much of the urine as possible. If the stain is already dry, you will need to re-wet the stain before proceeding. Do not use any type of heat such as a steam cleaner as this could set the stain and smell. White paper towels or white towels should be used for the job so that color doesn't transfer to your carpet. Put heavy objects such as books on top of the towels and leave overnight so that as much urine as possible is removed. Don't use your foot to apply pressure, as you could get urine on your shoe and then track it over your carpet, creating an even bigger mess.

Next, a specially formulated cat urine removal cleaner should be used after the carpet has dried. Common household cleaners should not be used since the urine needs to be broken down by a chemical process, or the odor will remain. The best cleaner to use will contain enzymes, chemicals, bacteria or a combination of the three to completely remove the smell. Products containing ammonia should not be used as your cat may interpret the smell of ammonia to be cat urine and continue to urinate on that section of carpet.

Before applying the cleaner, be sure to test on a small patch of carpet to check for colorfastness. The stain and surrounding area should be soaked thoroughly with the cleaner. Put foil or plastic wrap over the cleaner which will allow the carpet to stay wet longer, giving the cleaner more time work on the stain.

When the carpet is dry, baking soda can be sprinkled over the spot and then vacuumed up. Now, check to see if the cat urine odor is completely gone. If not, repeat the steps above, and treat a larger area in case part of the padding was missed.

If the odor remains after two treatments, you should consider replacing the padding. Before laying new padding, treat the subfloor with sealant so that future urine accidents won't soak into the concrete and wood which would cause a lingering odor.

While cat urine odor can be difficult to remove, with persistence and by following the tips above, you can be successful at eliminating the smell and stain.
