Just because I live in the suburbs, doesn't make my life easier than yours!?

In college, I had a lot of students who lived in decent areas tell me that I must be rich, etc...yet they never thought about how I was ostracized and harassed (among other traumatic issues) for being the only minority living in that area and attending that private school...
I am actually envious that they have a strong bond based on culture (I hail from the Islands originally) and have a support system...
Is that fair for them to assume my life was easier simply living in the burbs? No, not at all. I have been in both situations. Just because your family may not have had to deal with impoverished neighborhoods and drugged street corners doesn't mean that you guys didn't deal with racist comments and people thinking you don't deserve what you have. You know, some people think that you should act a certain way because of your skin color and if you don't, they say that you are acting like something you aren't. Yea, I have been there. Let me tell you something, everyone life is a struggle and just because your family has or doesn't have, or you live in a certain neighborhood, doesn't mean you are exempt from pain, from heartache, from trauma, and from bad times.
On a brighter note...what island do you hail from? My family is from Trinidad!#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
