Depends on what was being yelled. If it was just harassment of the ref with little vulagrities, then there is no excuse for calling the game. If the fans language was too excessive, then the game should have been stopped and the fans escorted away from the field. That's all that can be done. Wrong! If the referee feels that the fans are impacting in a grossly negative way he has the responsibility to terminate the match. Even if the consensus among the crowdmember is that it is okay to act like a bunch of punks.

Hell, when I played in high school (guys in fall, girls in spring) a good number from each team would show up and support the other (usually being quite vocal at both the ref and the other team). It's part of the game, and the ref should be able to handle it, if he finds he can't, then he needs to quit reffing. Maybe the participants that forget what the sport is about and decide to take it out on the referee should quit!

Funny sidenote, our girls team was falling victim to a particularly poor ref one evening and about 2/3 of the guys team happened to show up that night so it was pretty loud when a bad call went against our girls. At one point our coach (Bobby Knightesque at times) was pacing the sidelines looking like a lion about to take down a zebra until we started a great chant. The guys team started a rendition of "3 Blind Mice." Our coach (coached both guys and girls) walked around the field to the stands stood in the middle of us and joined in.
It got a standing ovation from the girls bench and everyone else in the stands...from both teams. That would be absolutely side splitting if I was still in JR High school. Since I am over the age of 15 I am surprised that you would admit to such immature conduct as if it is a badge of honor. Did YOU enjoy the game that day? Did the players? I suspect the referee didnt.........does that make you happy? Have a nice day.
Therein lies the problem. The referee had no business making this kind of statement in the first place. He should probably consider another hobby as it appears refereeing is not one of his forte's. Our local school district requires a school official to be present at the site of a sporting event. The officials are to introduce themselves to this person so they know who to look for in the event of a situation.
Last season I had a particular situation where escalating comments came from the student body of the stands. Sure a few of the comments annoyed me initially but I chose to ignore them. When a comment was made which I believed was directed directly at me, I then took matters into my own hands. At the next stoppage of play, I signalled time out and walked over to the home coach to have a word with him. I informed him I had had enough of the comments from the stands as the most recent one was percieved to be directed at me. He was then informed in the absence of the AD he would now be held accountable. If there were any further outbursts from the stands he would be asked to leave the premises. Although I won't go into exactly what was said, but I did tell him verbatum. He apologized and told me he would take care of the situation. We restarted the match consistant with the restart required for the ball out of play. The match also finished with no further outbursts from the stands.
The bottom line here is people are going to say what they want to say. Many times their mouth is running before they engage their brains. For this I give the spectators the benefit of the doubt. But you have to know when enough is enough. To do what the referee in the article did is inciting and he got what he deserved. You don't threaten someone, you simply inform them our your intention to hold them accountable.
Just from what is reported in this article, would you have halted the game? And in your area, would this go down as a forfeit, a tie, or a replay?
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/uniontrib/wed/sports/news_2s29p-soccer.html A bit hasty to make a decision based on the one sided comments of a coach dont you think? I am sure that his account is complete! I have had a few games that I felt the fans conduct was less then ideal. NFHS is NOT club! There are special rules and considerations in place to add an additional sense of fair play. Extra sensitivity to fan conduct might be a result of this. I would be very interested to see what the comments on this board would be if the reff had allowed the game to go on and a player got her leg broken..which happend in a game in my area last fall.
... we started a great chant. The guys team started a rendition of "3 Blind Mice." Our coach (coached both guys and girls) walked around the field to the stands stood in the middle of us and joined in. ... Funny story, except for the part about the coach joining in. He'd be gone from the game, and most likely fired by the school, if that had happened around here. If the school didn't get rid of him, the chapter would blackball the school and they'd have to (try to) contract with officials from another county at a hefty price for "travel expenses".

"He told us he was going to abandon (the game) if I couldn't control my fans," Hernandez said.
Therein lies the problem. The referee had no business making this kind of statement in the first place. What would you like him to say? "please, mr. coach, sir. I know that you are angry at my call in which I sent off your goon and that you have been adding to the fray by also criticising me but could you please assist me by asking the fine citizens in your stands to stop yelling the insult and profanity free comments on my heritage?"
In a NFHS game a referee should not have to put up with intimidation.
